Nurturing Artistic Talent and Healing Through The Young Masters Art Prize: Introducing ‘The Paintings in Hospitals Prize’

Art has the power to transcend time and bridge cultures, leaving a lasting impact on those who engage with it. The Young Masters Art Prize, now in its sixth edition, embodies this notion by celebrating artists who weave originality, skill, and imagination to respond to the art of the past. This prestigious initiative, founded by Cynthia Valianti Corbett in 2009, brings emerging artists into the limelight and opens doors to new opportunities. As the anticipation builds for the shortlist announcement in September 2023, there is a special addition to the Young Masters Prize family: 'The Paintings in Hospitals Prize’, fostering a connection between art, health, and wellbeing.

The call for artists began in May of this year, submissions closed on 9^th July and the shortlist will be announced in September. Shortlisted artists, armed with their captivating creations, will converge in London to feature in an exhibition. Coinciding with Frieze week, this year’s dual exhibitions showcase ceramics from 3^rd to 8^th October and the broader art prize from 10^th to 15^th October 2023. 

The 2023 edition marks a milestone in the Young Masters narrative with the introduction of 'The Paintings in Hospitals Prize.' Collaborating with our UK-based charity Paintings in Hospitals, this new award recognizes an artist whose work resonates with the theme of health and wellbeing. The £500 prize not only serves to acknowledge artistic talent but also contribute to the larger cause of using art to heal, inspire and make lives better.

We are excited to announce esteemed artist Ian Davenport, renowned for his innovative use of colour and form, will be joining the distinguished panel of judges for this prize. Ian Davenport is an Artist Patron of Paintings in Hospitals and some of his artworks feature in our collection. He will join forces with our Director and CEO Sandra Bruce-Gordon, art historian and art critic Richard Cork, and Paintings in Hospitals Patron and art collector Andrew Hochhauser KC. Together, their combined expertise promises to bring a discerning eye to the selection process, ensuring that the winning artwork not only exhibits exceptional artistic merit but also holds the potential to uplift the wellbeing of those who encounter it.
